type='text'>

Hi everyone!
I just rode from LA to Santa Barbara for a charity. Since being in California I have not raced. I have found so much pleasure in riding my bike that I have never felt the need to Race. Other people pass me and it is easy to see which one race or try to and which doesn't. I can't help thinking I was an over the top bike geek when I raced... power taps and heart rate monitors and training 6 hours a day, that was some CRazy stuff. I am not sure it was even healthy. Now I ride without stop watches or clocks, no fitness plan, no more sprints or sleeping in high altitudes . Life is much easier and funnier NOW. I can relax and enjoy the ride.

After returning from the UK, I found work in Burbank as a PA. After only one week of working for the Worst boss I have ever known, we were send home for the holidays. When we returned the company had closed. Needless to say, I turn him into the labor board. I have been working small free lance job for little or no money since. but i am gaining experience in the film industry and meeting fun and interesting people along the way. I've had some great bicycle adventures too. Here is my top ten places to ride in or near California: (so far)
1. Soledad caynnon (road and Mountain Bike) the tour of California cames though here.

2. Goat paths in Palm Springs ( Mountain bike)

3. Joshua Tree National forest. (Road bike)

4. Dillion Road neat Hot desert springs (Road bike)

5. Hwy 74 near Palm Springs (Road Bike)

6. Idlwild, Califonria (Mountain bike)

7. Big Bear, California (Mountain bike)

8. hwy 2 in LA (Road)

9. Red Rock caynnon Vegas (road and Mountain bike)

10 Mead lake- Vegas (road)

Just riding around LA is wild and not as dangerous as I once thought.

I meet some interesting bicycle people too. Above is a guy who lives on his bike with his two dogs. Can you image pulling those big dogs across the country? I can't

Then there is the Slab city people. WOW a lot of bicycle nuts there. Above is the welcome sign for slab city. it is a chopper bicycle.

I meet a drug gang that only ride bicycles. They stopped and talk to me because I had a COOL 29er. I met the man who rode his bicycle across the country until a car hit him the doctor told he could not ride any more so now he put motors on his bikes so he can keep riding across the country and the list goes on. Brighton being the high light. When I got to Dover. I went across to France. I did not like traveling in France. Belgium was equally hard to travel in but the people were very friendly and accommodating. I started getting a cold so I headed back to London for a rest. I guess I will have to discover the Northern and Holland in another trip. London is a great place to people watch party and explore the British culture.
He is a picture of my bike on the eurostar (train);

Winter Training in the west 2008

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_MQRx1Lab-z0/R5ZoQR-HJYI/AAAAAAAAAA0/idDnsNtxDQc/s320/1-22-2008-22.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158425052110595458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_MQRx1Lab-z0/R5ZnCh-HJXI/AAAAAAAAAAs/jmv2ZsjtufI/s320/1-22-2008-12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158423716375766386" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_MQRx1Lab-z0/R5ZmqB-HJWI/AAAAAAAAAAk/i9mHDzNy934/s320/1-22-2008-03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158423295468971362" />
Once again, I toured the Southwest for winter training. This time I didn't take a car. I rode over half the trip by bicycle. The rest of the time, I used a bus or train. I went to Palm Spring California to find some great riding on Thousand Palms drive and along the base of the Joshua Tree National Park (Dillon road). I also found a senic 48 mile climb up highway 74 and into the small artist village of Idyllwild. It was only 5000ft but hwy 74 has plenty of rolling hills to tear at the legs. I attended the Palms Spring International film festival and then headed back to Tucson.
Tucson is really a bicycle mecca. Ora Valley lead me to the Biosphere one day and then to the Kit peak Observatory another day. Of course my main goal was to ride Mt Lemmon (26 miles at 8000ft) and so I did. Check out the pictures.

I also threw in a couple of dirt road rides. One the Funnest was up Reddington road on the North side of Tucson. (picture)
On my way down, I decided to wait until the sunset and I am glad I did. What a great country this is!!!! Most days it was around 60 while Oklahoma was in the 20's
Boy it was hard returning this time.
Randall

biking on the computor

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_MQRx1Lab-z0/R0jRW8V_cYI/AAAAAAAAAAc/MoJKXjyk980/s320/mtbshot_002.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5136585567101743490" />

Great news, Adventure Bicycle Center is going into the virtual world by way of Second Life. This is the the world's most prestigious cycling event.

The race is made up of 20 stages and a prologue and ultimately covers over 2,200 miles. The race consists of 11 flat stages, seven on mountains and two individual time trials. There will also be rest days on Monday, July 16 and Tuesday, July 24 before it finally concludes on July 29 with a grand finale across the Chevreuse Valley before entering Paris. There the riders will race around the Champs-Elysees, the most prestigious and broadest avenue in Paris.

After the Tour's grand opening in London, the race sends riders to north France. From Dunkerque, France, sprinters are tested by five relatively flat stages before reaching Bourg-en-Bresse and four days in the Alps. Then in southeast France, riders reach Tallard at stage 10 for two stages of flat riding before heading into the Pyrenees Mountains for the next six days. When in Pau after the mountain stages, there are just four stages remaining, with the last stage entering Paris.

Gone are the days of Lance Armstrong's dominating seven-year run as champion. margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/4937/1717/320/166394/arizona%20077.jpg" border="0" alt="" />
I cheated, stoled, and lied to everyone but I got to go ride around the southwest for a little over one week. I loved it! "Bye Tulsa! The winter sucks here and I'll be in arizona".

Tucson was the best town in the Southwest. This is why I liked it so much:
1. There are Bike lane out the wazoo. You would have to be braindead not to be able to commute in Tucson. The whole city is flat making it simple to get to work without breaking a sweat. Want to train on the hills? Just head toward the wall of mountains any where around the city.
2. I didn't have enough time to make all the mountian bike spots. There is a reason to own a down hill bike here. yea!
3. If you like riding the same roads as most pro during in the winter then you will like Tucson too.
A. Mt Lemmon is a MUST ride. 27 miles at 5% all the way to the top.
7 changes in climit so be prepared. Dress in layers
B. The velo area is a favorite of the locals. local rides start at the
College University and 6th at 7:30 am.
C. Mt kitt.
D. Mountain "A" the only mountain with a gaint A on it.
E. The Gate Pass and a host of other great road.
The only problem you may run into is the amount of traffic in Tucson. sure you got your huge bike lane with no cars in it at all. but your not alone. Look to your left!

Want to ride in a more rural place? Try Silver City to the East of Tucson a town of about 10,000 I like the 93 mile route over the continal divide and back.... for flat roads Lood on a map and ride the roads that runs alone the river and time trial it.

A little farther east is El Paso. It is an interest town but not as bike friendly. It sets right on the Mexico border. Don't leave anything in your car in this town the crime is bad. For road riding try:
1. Senic by pass (pictured above)
2. Transmountain by pass.
link them all together for and great long ride.
for mountain biking the trail just off from the transmountain road can't be beat.

Well that's about it. Winter training for the traveler of the south west...
I be thinking about it all winter long. If I get more then 2 or 3 days off I will be gone again.

I pedaled an Ordinary bicycle for the first time
today. If that seems ordinary, let me rephrase, I rode a
Penny Farthing, or what some people call a
"High Wheeler". (The wheels we ride ride today
uesd to be called "safeties".) This was a
reproduction from the seventies, with a 54"
front wheel and a tiny little 20" rear wheel.

I was able to get on from the right side with
my left foot's toes hooked on the mounting peg
on the left. Only your toes can be hooked there
because if not the front wheel will swivel into
your foot and you'll lose control since you won't
have the front free to steer with. It is definitely
intimidating. It is truly a fixed gear, and
this one had no brake.

It also had hard rubber tires (with a hollow core),
so the only shock damping was from the vertical
give of the big wheel and a modern padded saddle.

This bike had a narrower-than-stock replacement
handlebar, so steering leverage to counteract pedaling
force was slightly lacking. So at slow speed, (the
only speed I went), torque steer was pretty evident.
Also the headset sucked, but when these things
were first built in the 1880's, ball bearing
surfaces were an extra cost option.
You have to think about and plan cornering because,
of course, your ankles and knees are pivoting
along with the bars and the front wheel.

Rather than fall off, I got the pricipals involved
to grab the bike as I stopped.

Got the fool thing on show at the shop, so come on
up!

Pump tracks

Pump track mania is sweeping the globe. Mountain bikers everywhere are building endless loops of rollers and berms, and the riders are getting smoother, fitter and faster.
These mini tracks teach you to maintain speed — no, gain speed — over bumps and through tight corners. Almost anyone can ride a pump track. Beginners fumble, jumble and stumble, while experts manual, jump and rip. On pump tracks the speed, fear and risk are low, but the effort, fun and improvement are high.
Legend has it that Mick Hannah trained extensively on a pump track before he demolished the 2004 Sea Otter Classic. Knowing the fastest Aussies pump on a regular basis, pro downhiller Steve Wentz built a track at The Fix in Boulder, Colo. last fall. At first, his L-shaped loop was barely rideable, but within a week the lines were grooved and the riders were grooving.
When I posted a story and videos on this site, pump track reports poured in. The kids in Whistler, BC started building them. The guys at Riding High in Taichung, Taiwan built one. And Ray Petro of Ray’s MTB, the indoor bike park in Cincinnatti, made an awesome one out of wood. Pump tracks are superfun, and they’re good for you, so you might as well build one of your own.
Pick a spot. You can have plenty of fun in as little as 40 x 20 feet. Yes, that’s the size of your basement. More space means wider turns, bigger rollers and greater speeds. Flat land is best, but you can always rail some downhill berms then pump back uphill on a roller staircase. Oof.
Lay it out. Start with the turns. Make them tight enough to pump but not so tight you struggle to make them. A radius of about 75 inches works well. The 38-inch turn at The Fix creates champions but robs speed. Make sure your berms have constant arcs, and build them gradually from flat to vertical. When you get the hang of your track, you’ll be pulling almost three Gs and leaning 70 degrees.

Fill in the spaces. Build rollers or doubles between your turns. Avoid flat spots. Every square inch on your track should tilt upward, downward or sideways. No time for coasting!
Riding your pump track

Choose your weapon. Dirt jump hardtails and stiff dual suspension slalom bikes work well. A 24-inch cruiser with foot pegs and no brakes might be ideal.
Smoothness first, speed second. Charge into your pump track like a maniac, and you’ll injure a bystander. Start super slow, sucking up the front sides and pumping the backsides, and watch the speed build on its own.
Attack the berms. Dive into them like the sideways holes they are. Pump them for speed and get out of there!
Race! Mountain crossers should do three-lap time trials. Downhillers should keep it flowing for 10 laps. XC racers can keep rolling until the other guys kick them out. For head-to-butt fun, start two riders on opposite ends and let them pursue each other. The guy who gets caught loses. Switch directions. Rest. Repeat.
I hope this is helpful. In the near future I’ll show you the best ways to build rollers and berms. In the mean time, start designing!

This page has videos showing early sessions on The Fix’s pump track: http://leelikesbikes.com/Stories/010405

The coffee table bicycle

You have seen this, Right? You are invited to a co-worker house for dinner and there is a huge book on the coffee table. The book will have pictures of fine art or if your lucky a book on the Tour De France Pictures. If your real lucky it is a single friend with Playboys. While waiting, I realize my friend has a collect of "coffee table bicycles" in the garge. Let me explain, The topical coffee table bicycle could be displayed on a table or on a blank wall in ones living room. Whats a bike doing in the living room of a nice home? there is nothing wrong with that and YES that is what it is like at my home but it is not a nice home!!!!!!

This bicycle is never ridden and if so extreme care would be given so no dirt or water would touch it. So what is a coffe table Bike??? It is one or more bicycles that is so obscure and has so much emotional attachment that the owner would search the world over to fine the matching parts or accessories for it. Let me take this a bit farther and explain one of my friends bikes. The frame is Ventana, Never heard of it?? a custum build frame from a small company only known to those who seek them out. It took my friend years to find and settle all on this frame. But he didn't stop there. The conponts are Stella Azzura which he ordered directly from Italy. The seat was brooks costing $300. He used Nokon brand Cables which are differnt from most cables because of the bead like housing. Why? I don't KNOW!
The bar tape was used because he didn't want to get adersive on his new Carbon fiber bars. He told me; "There are just to pretty to be covered up" I will not bring up the paint job. it is just to hard to explain. Well that is a cofee table bike. This would be a funny story if it were not for the fact he has 3 of these bikes.
This is not a real person but one that corey and I have made to past the time a little faster.....

Landis was framed

Landis Was Framed! I have no proof. They is no way I could prove anything but the whole thing stinks and I smell a europ rat.
It strange that Tyler was on Phonack when he was labled a dopper. same team same lab. hhhhmmmm! The team fires the rider and then the rider doesn't have a job or time to train. He is gone! Just being accused could end a riders career forever. Gulity until proved innocent?
The news of Landis was leaked by the lab in question to the press. That was wrong. Did they get into trouble?
Is Landis's team care and was he set up? My answer: "They would only care about him when he wins". It would be worth it for them to drug to him. Why didn't the team get in trouble?
How could he be set up?
It would be easy to set a rider like Landis up. Water hand ups could be druged and message oils and lotions could have illegal drugs on them. I don't even care if my information is right but the one thing I do know is if Landis is dropping EVERYONE IS.
I have a real problem with US media. They are not "keepers of the truth" they are people who want to use power to get head lines and good headlines are always BAD news.
This is just another case of "The lab that cried wolf" and the media who wants to sell their out-of-date newspapers.
The Euros have been pointing fingers for years and now that it is pointed at American and we are playing into the euro's game of getting rid of any American riders from the tour de France.

Here is another thought:
Besides, Anyone who can race 120 plus miles a day for 2 weeks would have to have medical attention of some point. Is it humany possible to do that? if it were it would take you most of your life to train for it. Which has been the case in all of the Tou de france riders. They are a phyical freak of nature. But would their spent all there life working toward a goal like winning the Tour de France and then take a change of dropping. I wouldn't!

Mmm, Pie!!

Pie on Ragbrai, where riding a bike is only an excuse for the food!!

http://forums.desmoinesregister.com/cgi-bin/WebX?50@235.HgO4aUKsjjF.0@.eea99f2

Used to read a sports column in the Cedar Rapids Gazette by a writer by the name of Gus Schrader called "Red Peppers", and when he didn't have one specific topic, he just put a topic line that read "Pass the Hash", (uh, that's corned beef hash to you.) Well, all I've got is hash
this time around.

Darker and Darker

The arrest of Manuel Saiz and 3 others of the Liberty Seguros team really puts the final nail in the coffin of the idea that doping has been an individual effort in cycling. Rather than Roberto Heras being a lone case and and the Festina affair in '98 an aberration, this really makes the team managers, soigneurs and doctors look like true hypocrites and outright liars in some cases.

The Spanish police found (quoting from Velonews) " News that Saiz was caught red-handed with a refrigerated bag containing frozen blood and €60,000 in cash proved too much for the American sponsor. "

You've got to wonder about about people like Tyler Hamilton, for example. I like the guy and I want him to be innocent of those findings, but this newest scandal paints the sport in a guilty red.

Liberty Seguros is the Spanish name of an American company, Liberty Security Insurance, and they pulled the sponsorship of the team immediately (the team is currently racing the Giro d' Italia.) They said (again from Velonews), "We stayed with the team after the Heras case because we didn't think that 30 or 40 people should pay for error of one person," Selvig said. "We also made it very clear that we would not tolerate the hint of doping."

Good Customer Service

Dear Bell,

The front brow pad on my 2005 Sweep R (manufacture date, April '05, size medium, white*), has come apart. The red (wicking material?) covering the foampad has separated from that foam. I purchased the helmet last fall. I have done road riding and off road riding, and have not crashed thehelmet.

( *Number in shell is B159)

Wondered if I can get that small part warranted?
-------

Hi Corey,

Thank you for your request. Also, thank you for providing all of the information, so that we could help you. We ordered replacement pads and you should see them in less than 2 weeks.
Sincerely,
Jan

TOOMCOB Syndrome

I hesitate to put this in, but every shop rat out there has seen it: Too Much Crap on Bike Syndrome. Went riding with a friend (who will remain nameless), a few weeks back, and he put a plastic light on the front, crammed in the spaces around an aerobar (of course), and it quickly popped off and scattered bits of plastic for yards up and down the trail.

There are several bikes in the shop right now that qualify for this accusation. You've seen them; they rattle, stuff falls off, the computer is still on the bike even though the battery failed four years ago, an un-aero aerobar, they have oversized and rattling tool or seat bags, tools for most contingencies, and so on.

It'll drive you crazy.

Funny Tips for cyclist!

Have you ever used Butt Butter? Don't know what it is? It is what cyclists use to releive the pain and soreness that sometimes goes with being in the saddle for days at a time. It is a cream that is put in your shorts to reduce friction.
I have found a produce that works pretty well. What is it? A produce called "bag balm". It is used for cows in the milking process when the cow's utter get sore from being milked daliy. You can find it at about any pharmacy. Just look for the black and white spotted bottle. yee ha!

Here is a tip for the mountain bikers out there! If your local trail has a lot of ticks. Here is what you do: Use Dog shampo. The green stuff works the best. It will keep the ticks from eating you alive, but will your wife treat you like a dog? Not sure about that.

Note! I can't take any responsibly if you have any nasty side effects from these tips: loss of body hair, death, stuff like that........
Good Luck!
Randall

The 29er is getting popular

Well the 29er has been around for a while, But Oklahoma has just started seeing them pop up. My first mountain bike race of 2006 was last weekend and I was suprized to see so many 29ers. I counted 4 in my category.
I rode a 29erl last year to see what it was about. Even when I wanted to ride my 26" I didn't. I trained, rode, raced and toured on the 29er. So here is what I found out about the 29er (in a nut shell). They are fast but you have to know how to use one, effectively. What do I mean by that? Do a lot of training and find out what works for you.
Here are some of my conclusions:

The good
Big Wheels go over stuff smoother ( hey! that's true! )
Big wheels push easier ( some times You have to learn to use it's strenghts by keeping up your speed up and sometimes spinning your pedals at a higher RPM)
Big wheels are plushier but it's not full sup by no means ( try the soft tail if you want a 29er with full sup)
Big wheels stay up-right better (Yes, only when traveling faster then walking speed. It is like a gryo)
Big wheels climb smoother ( yes, longer wheel base)
Big wheels Corner just as well as 26" (better at faster speeds)
Big wheels don't bend easer ( believe me a have bent a lot of 26" wheels)
Big wheels turn corners without slipping at higher speeds.
Big wheels feel better ( because most 29ers have lower bottom backets so you feel in control a bit more)

The bad
Big wheels are heavy ( pay attendetion to the weight of your tires/wheels) my 29er is 4 punds heavier then my 26" of about the same quality. You will be forced to watch your weight with a 29er.
Big wheels take more power ( if your over 5'9" your fine)
Big wheels are not cheap ( parts are higher too) in other words you can't buy real cheap tires etc. Why would you want too anyway?
Big wheels don't go up long steep climbs as effective as 26" ( this is only true if your older and don't have the climbing endurance)
Big wheels don't jump! 29er is not as funto jump! It likes to go in a straght line when throw in the air!
Big wheels don't go up-wind very well ( back to the power thing)

The ugly
Big wheels throw a lot of mud! (te he.... on who ever is behind you)
Big wheels still look odd to people in Oklahoma but they will get use to it!

This is what I would ride in the Tour De Dirt.

Elk City NOT a 29er course if windy
Keystone NOT a 29er course. Ouch!
Zink this is a 29er course*****
Tour De Lizard - could go 26 or 29.
RDR NOT a 29er course ( too many tight corners, too much starting and stopping)
Romen Nose this is a 29er course ****
Tom Steed up to you!
Devil's Den this is a 29er course ****
12 miles of hell this is a 29er course. ***
Osage Hills This is a 29er course (if you know the course) heaver 29er beware)
Thurder bird This is a 29er *****
I hope this give you some insight into the 29ers

Randall

Watch more bike videos

Hi everyone,
I have set up a new YOU TUBE group for those of us that make and/or like to watch bicycle videos. I flew out Thursday am and returned this morning, I will admit; that it was really nice flying vs. driving the entire way. Of course, I still had to drive for 7-8hrs to get to West Texas from Austin. If you have never been to the Big Bend area, you would be very surprised. We drove in around 11pm, so in the desert it was total darkness! I could tell by the engines roar we were going up some serious climbs. Then waking up Friday am and seeing the beautiful West Texas mountain ranges is always a treat.

Race day: I did not get to eat like I normally do, did not get to warm up like I normally do, and got to change a flat tire with 5mins until the start time! I am sitting on my trainer getting ready to line up and I look at my front wheel as it is bagging a bit. I feel it and let out a panic "oh $h@! to myself". Of course, I try and just put air in and see if it will seal, I was desperate! I ride over to the truck and am thinking not another bad race! I rip the tire off, put the new one on and add a bottle of sealant (lots of cactus there)! Get the tire on and sealed up, I ride over the the line and the official says, 1min until start, whew! I looked down at the front tire, it is on backwards, but who cares it has air!

We take of, I settle in behind J. Sager and all the sudden the Bryan "falling" Fawley rips off like it is a 20 mile race. We all shake our heads and say stupid kid! A group of 6-7 of us formed up front pretty quick, we catch up with Fawley about 20min in and he goes over the bars on a rocky section; hence the name. Let me tell you, there are no trees in the desert to block the wind and it was like racing in an open field at times, drafting was big! I ended up at the front a bit too much, no ones fault but my own! I get the word that Sager has flatted, so I punch it! We lose a few more riders and it is now, Fawley, myself, and Kurtz (who was the smartest, he did a lot of drafting the first 32miles). I am getting into Fawleys head, I rubbed his wheel a few times and he picks it up, we draft!

The climb: after about 28miles of punching it through the desert single track we head up the mountain climb. It is a little over 3miles of a climb, not bad for Tejas! I am feeling good, I look over my shoulder and see a gap between myself and the other two. I tell myself, to early to go out alone; so I back off a bit. I look over my shoulder again same thing; I back it down again. It is two-32 mile laps, and it is wide open in the desert single track. I would have wore myself out alone!

Lap two: Fawley was definately working a bit harder than I, but Kurtz still sat in, he would not take the lead. I am up front and realize that we have dropped Fawley, now Kurtz is ready to pick it up! He and I really punch it for the next 5-6miles to ensure that it is just he and I!

Final climb: As we are heading to the climb I am starting to feel the fatigue in my legs, now Kurtz is starting to hurt me a bit on his pulls. We hit the base of the hill, I made the mistake of leading, I should have sat on his wheel and paced of him. I am grinding up the hill and all he sudden, Kurtz pops it around one of the switch backs, I bridge up; and he attacks again and I bridge up. He attacked one final time, and I am sad to say that I did not chase. I settled for second at that point, then I start getting angry at myself. I started to chase him, but it was too late. After the climb it is pretty much down hill, have I ever said that Kurtz use to be a pro downhill racer! The man can descend!

All in all, it was a good race! Once again, I am glad to see where my fitness is, I made some tactical mistakes. I do need to do some road racing to learn how not to work! Kurtz also was on a Belgium Pro team on the road, damn roadie mentality! He raced the smarter race, but it is a long season and I will continue to get stronger and wiser!

Raymond Hall

Amperage vs Wattage

My primary job is at an auto parts retailer, and as such it has very little to do with bicycles. But, there are moments of synergy.

A customer came in to the store the other day, and was measuring the automotive batteries when I greeted him. I asked him what he needed to put the battery in to and he needed to have it fit a 6" by 9 1/2" tray. So he agreed to show me the vehicle and it turned out to be a custom three wheeler low rider tricycle. The setup had a hydraulic compressor with a pressure line routed through the frame to raise and lower the front wheel and fork. The trike's frame was painted a metalflake orange, with lots of chrome.

He had fabricated two battery trays that were above the rear axle on each side and below the banana seat. We had to find two batteries that would be just the right size to fit. They would power the hydraulic pump (and probably be way may amperage than needed), but would look cool, not to mention symmetrical.

After a about three tries to get the right battery, I finally found two that would look right in the trays.

He happily bought both. He told me that he was going to show the trike and ride it around at the Starbird Rod and Custom car show this weekend (Feb. 18-19th) in Tulsa. The trike should be a hit.

Tulsa Wheelmen Secret Training Camp 2006

Tulsa Wheelmen Cat 3 Secret Training Camp 2006
I am racing for a new road team this year. Well, I am not new to this team but after a short two year MIA I am back. Most of the same people I started out racing with years ago are on this cat 3 team. I couldn't have pick a better group of guys to race with this year. There wasn't even any flats the whole weekend. WOW! The senery by far made up for the cold weather. It was a great weekend.
We met at the Wihilmina State Park Lodge in the Ouachata Mountain area of Oklahoma and Arkansas. We rode for over 6 hours the first day around and over highway 1 and around 3 hours the second day though Mena and West up highway 1. Mine was, well let's start by saying it was actually nice to be back in the racing atmosphere. You know the usual lying about how many hours you are training, how your legs are feelin', you know holding your cards low! I got my head phones on and am spinning away on the trainer, you have all seen my routine! Feeling good, ready to race. I look over at the starting line, 2 of the junior Xpert racers that have moved up are on the line. How cute I thought, then I take another look a few minutes later. OH, $hi!. The line is full, by time I get off my trainer and over to the line, I am starting third row back and it is a long, but narrow start! I clawed my way (may have thrown a few elbows) and made my way to 2nd place, then all hell broke loose. New bike and a few bugs to work out. Chain slips, I slip back to 6 place: make my way back to 4th place and am closing in on the leaders. Then my heel(don't ask me how) slams into my ft der ( I do wear a 13 shoe) It knocks my FT der down about 1/2" into my chainring. I usually carry a multi tool, but first race and did not realize it was not in my bag. I wasted a few minutes on the side of the trail feeling sorry for myself. Then stepped on the ft der and bent it enough to ride. It was grinding like crazy though. I rode for about 2miles and finally stopped and asked some campers if I could borrow a tool: fixed it and rode like a man on a mission. I was flying by people in sections that I could barely pedal in before.

So, I once again claw my way up to a top ten spot and am making up some serious time. When all the sudden this camera man, Snap (the flash) scares the pooh out of me, I look back at him and miss the sign that said Racers this way and 12under this way! I rode down the wrong trail for several minutes before I finally convinced myself to turn around. And once again I am chasing down guys that I have already passed. They were very confused as I came flying by them AGAIN! Nearing the finish of the race really railin' it, my bar catches a tree and launches me into another tree. I literally hear a snap-crackle-pop in my neck as my head slammed into the tree. I shook it off and was able to pick off 2 more racers before the finish.

Now, the morning after, I feel like POOH once again. My neck is stiff my body is bruised, my knee has a major abrasion on it. And I can't wait until the next race: pay backs are a bitch and I will get my revenge on those. guys. You know, maybe a race like this is what you need sometimes to rejuvinate the soul!

I started this email wanting to just check in with you all, and wanted to let you know: that even I have bad races. But, these bad races are what make us stronger. Of course, I mean stronger mentally. I did not give up and was able to ride across that finish line proud of myself. Remember, Pain is temporary, and quiting last forever!
Raymond

For more about Raymond follow these links:
http://www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?compid=149104
http://www.mountainbikeracer.com/racerprofiles/display.php?id=114-1103373578

Raymond Hall is my coach this year and he has helped me in more ways then he knows. I started racing at a mature age so I will never get to his level or experence the type of racing he does, but having the insight of a semi-pro's experiences "good or bad" is an inspiration.
He held a training camp for his students two weekends ago and it was an epic event. If Tulsa's bicycle community had more racers willing to share as Raymound does, I believe we would have a bigger and better racing commuity here in Tulsa.
Randall

Shop Humor

Too weary lately to go ride, but here's some bike shop humor
for "y'all";

A couple put a kids 10-speed (24x1/38" tires) on
X-mas layaway... the Slime (sticky, anti-freeze green)
anti-flat puncture sealant accessory was
purchased and the tires were duly charged with same,
I inflated the tires slightly higher than max as the
bike would be unused for some weeks... He was a sincere man of conviction and integrity. He loved bicycling and showed it by being very active in the sport. Jim helped me personally by silently volunteering for races while both of us were members of the Tulsa Wheelmen bicycle club. Later he helped form and organize Keystone Off Road Society (a Mountain bike club). Jim also founded and promoted the Dam Jam Race, which will continue in his honor.
I never saw Jim when he wasn't riding his heart out and having fun doing it. Jim was the kind of guy you would be proud to know and always gald he was around. A true friend to many.
Now that he is gone, I hope I can be as positive an inspiration to others as he was to me.

He are a few thing other cyclings have said about Jim:

Eric wrote:
I was looking through race pics last night when I came across one of Jim at the Ouachita Challenge a couple of years ago. A photographer on one of the long downhills had caught Jim in mid flight going over the bars. If I remember right that section was almost a mile long, and I was hitting 20mph on my rigid single speed. Jim was on a real bike, so he was probably going that or better. It had to hurt. He just brushed off the leaves and kept on racing. I talked to him at the end of 62 miles of Arkansas' finest trails and biggest climbs. When most guys were barely willing to nod or grunt when spoken to, Jim was all smiles. He will be sorely missed, but remembered well, and often. E

Jeremy Wrote:
This is Sad news indeed - In the summer that Amy and I ran the Thursday night crits, Jim Marshall would show up before everyone else and sweep and layout the course. Jim made a small task into something I appreciated and looked forward to every week. He was a kind gentlemen and a wonderful friend. Jeremy

Greg Wrote:
It was always a pleasure to see Jim at a race. You could count on Jim to have a great attitude and plenty of words of encouragement for everyone. He seemed to love every aspect of our sport. You said he will be greatly missed. I couldn't agree more.

JACK wrote:
Many of you will remember Jim Marshall as one of our very active Master riders as well as a fine race official. Please remember him and his family in your prayers. He will be greatly missed.

Jim Passed away January 2006:
It was very sudden and unexpected, and was apparently a heart attack triggered by a recent lung biopsy plus the medication involved. Gone but not forgotten! There are some great old-school screens of mountain bike down hill racing and even the bicycle messagers culture some where in Canada. This movie started out in English then turns french. Watch out for that ending. A great movie to watch over and over agian.
Movie title is "Two Second" by Manon Briand
Click link below for a amazon.com search
http://www.amazon.com
"The Cyclist"
"The cyclist" is a very strange movie written by Mohsen Makhmalbaf.
The subject doesn't have a lot to do with cycling as we in the US know it. It is about a former cyclist whos name is "Nassim" His story is about despair, poverty and how he over comes these challages. This former bicycle racer pedals for 6 day straight. Want to see the way people exploit one another and make it though life in Iran? Take a look at this movie. Far from your typical American films, this movie has some real stories of suffering.
Click link below for a search of this movie on Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com

Randall Clayborn

Little 100 Project Bike 2006

This is how we built up a single speed kid's race bike for competition in the regional Little 100 race. We had been collecting parts for about a year now, including donations and items bought at auction. We used extra parts from our own bikes and NOS (new old stock) parts from a another bike shop we had purchased.

Right now the only rules on the Little 100 bikes say they must have a single speed coaster brake with road tires. There are no Little 100 rules governing the composition of the bike; frame or fork, the wheels (except for the coaster brake), the spoke count, the type of bar, stem or seat post, so the sky was the limit. Or so it seemed. We wanted to make the lightest and fastest Little 100 bike on the planet but since we couldn't spend any (or very little) money, we were limited.

Notice the coaster brake drive train (close-up picture). Corey and I found a 28 hole Sachs coaster hub and matched it up with a 28 hole Sun 700c aero rim. The hub was a smooth-turning German-made model. This turned out to be a very cool bonus for the bike.

This bicycle could be a great commuter. I have been riding it and found it to be a great recovery/spin bike. It is also a safe alternative to a "no brakes" track bike. We always have a few bikes hanging around the shop that we call "project bikes", but this Little 100 project bicycle was by far the most fun. Once we get set up with another frame we will be building up the next bike to an even lighter target weight.

Randall
-----------
The Little 100 Project Bike

Fetish Cycles - 7005 Aluminum frame - 53 cm track frame
Generic carbon fiber fork
6061 Al seat post
Selle Italia Flite saddle
Planet X seat clamp
Sun Rims - Swift-Tai 28 hole, black
290mm stainless spokes, 2.0mm straight gauge
(next bike will have DT Swiss Competition Spokes in black.)
Rear hub - Sachs coaster brake 28 hole
Standard Square Tapered BB - (May have a lighter splined b/b in the next bike.)
Sugino 170mm mtb cranks - 42t chain ring mounted inside of ring
(The next bike may have a lighter Deore Hollow tech 175mm.)
Standard one speed 1/8" 18t rear cog, (included with hub)
Front Wheel - Shimano 540 quick release, 16 spoke
Tires - Vittoria Ultra Speed 700X23
Tubes - ultra light presta, long valve
Stem - Cinelli Solid
Bars - Japan Alpes track bars
Headset - Zero Aheadset, sealed
Team Little 100 stickers, Oklahoma State Univerity stickers
Resin platform pedals
I found some very unique and comfortable track-style grips

Little 100 bicycle for 2006 season
Total weight 17 pounds
----------------

CX winner set new goal in 2006!

Pictured here is Scott Gibson riding his way to a solo win at the Bartlesville Cyclocross Championship Sunday Dec. 4th 2005. The start is on the east west pavement that is the main exit of the park.
We go toward madison road then right onto the shoulder North and over the Pathfinder culvert. (pictured)
that is very fast, then we dive off and across the volleyball bottomless sand pits (arrgghh!!) plus barriers(pictured), goes to the flag stones side walk and heirpins back along the creek, through the gully twice, up hill and cut back and forth across a gravel road, then back towards the bandshell, long steep run up the hill (out of breath yet?) with barriers, behind the maintenance shed and across the road to the baseball field, and then by the pool, there is a really cool, fun fast set of switchbacks through the gully(pictured), up on the road and uphill on pavement and then down hill into the gully on the other side of the road, then finally back towards the road and the start-finish.
In the upper left is the picture of the down hill switch backs.
In the upper Right is the picture of the sand pit.
In the lower left is the picture of the start and the finsh(right side is the start and the left side is the finish)
One last note: The pictures don't show how much climbing there is, Remember Ray Brown Park in Sand Springs? this is just as hard. The fast parts are super fast and the run-up is steep. We tried to make the fastest course possible so most of the slow grassly areas are down hill and most of the pavement is up hill.
Dec. 4th 2005 the races start at 1pm for more information go to www.adventurebicyclecenter.com and click on Oklahoma Cyclocross State Championships
Does your team eant to check it out before hand? The plot revolves around a well known professional road cyclist, Jeff Forester, who mysteriously passes out and crashes at the front of a charity ride at the beginning of the show.

Gregory House is an irascible but brilliant doctor and diagnostician who practices at a New Jersey based teaching hospital, along with a team of clinical and teaching physicians. He insults his patients at the same time he cures them. At the same time he is addicted to Vicodin for pain due to a lame leg suffered during emergency surgery.

Initially House refuses to treat the star rider, who he believes to be a doper who uses EPO. But the cyclist denies that he uses EPO and instead, admits he does do blood doping, and use hyperbaric (oxygen tent) training, herbal supplements and IV drip for electolytes.

The staff debates the morals of cheating to win at a game, versus being a hero to thousands of kids. At the same time they struggle to find what actually is wrong with him, because as they treat him his symptoms get worse.

House eventually narrows the problem to either use of EPO, or cancer. Then they find PRCA (Pure Red Cell Anemia) that is caused by drug use. He goes into Forester's room and takes out the breathing tube and accuses Forester of lying about the EPO. The rider insists he didn't use the drug, so while his manager is there in the room, House and Forester both come to the conclusion that she slipped him EPO without his knowledge. Forester fires her on the spot. But before that, the manager leaks the word to the press that the famous cyclist has cancer. She says it was just for the publicity!

But it turns out Dr. House was wrong. They give him Pregnazone to conteract the PRCA, and then instead he passes out and needs a transfusion. Initially they missed the cancer, but it was very subtle, and the kicker was that the hyperbaric treatment and the blood doping Forester was doing at home actually kept the tiny cancerous tumor at bay! The two items that he did to himself actually were the same medical treatments for the type of cancer he had. He had a Thymoma tumor on the Thymus gland in his neck, that they find by MRI'ing. Then they fix it by removing the gland.

The thing I found to criticize was the actor who played Jeff Forester, had just a little too much body fat to look quite like a professional roadie, otherwise his portrayal was excellent. They bikes they were riding at the beginning looked a bit like cyclocross bikes, but I think they were road bikes. House banters a little about yellow jerseys and the the staff remark sarcastically about the "bike police", but I'm sure few viewers would have recognized a mention of the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) or WADA.

Really a fun show and it had the usual good House jokes and cutting sarcasm. It was nice to professional bicycle racing in a prime time portrayal, even if was in a controversial light.

KORS and ABC team updates

Members and visiters,
The following are a few KORS club updates for your review.

We are forming the KORS/ABC Elite team for next year. She was always a roadie until now!
I am not going anywhere to race this Sunday sooo Does anyone want to meet at the Osage trails for a ride and/or trimming up, Sunday afternoon??? 1:00 until around 4 or 5pm?
The red loop needs a little triming and it is done. I then felt better about getting out late and not helping the guys set up the course. I brewed up the decaf, then shuffled off to the park by way of Panera Bread.

Met Chuck D. and the rest of the posse at Chandler, then pre-rode Raton's course on the mountain bike. He/they really came up with a good course, especially within the limitations of the fairly flat terrain of the park's area he was confined to. Compared to last year they found even better lines through the wooded sections to the southeast of the ball field.

For the Category 4/5 45 minute opening race I provided water handups to Raton, Brent Wilson, Randall C., Jay Thomas, Tim King and the Celestial Cycles guy. I believe Raton won, with Randall cruising to second (I think).

The second (Open) one hour race had around 12 entrants and had a spirited battle for second and third places. First was a runaway by a Tulsa Wheelman whose name escapes me at the moment (so much for journalism!)

They had an even better turn out for women (six vs. just four last year) and by my very rough count, there looked to be about thirty or so competitors altogether. On a down note, not too many people came up from Oklahoma City to race, about four, I was told. A good time was had by all, which is the best way to have a cyclocross race!

John Lieswyn's Diary from Cyclingnews.com, the World
Championships; pretty good stuff:

John Lieswyn is one of Cyclingnews' most popular and sometimes controversial diarists. John started road racing in Florida in 1985. After college graduation in 1990, he raced three seasons for the US National team in Germany, France and Italy, turning professional in 1993 for Coors Light. In 1995 he returned to Europe, scoring numerous top ten results and winning the Delemont (Switzerland) mountain stage of the Regio Tour. Directions: Take the first left after entering the park. If you go by the ranger's station you have went too far. There are hiking trails inside the park so don't get confused and ride those. Most trails are not marked yet. there is about 5 miles of trail right now 10/23/05
Below is a map of the Trails I found after being grown over and burnt by spring fires. 9/25/05
The trails were built by the local club and used in the winter about 5 years ago but have not been used for a season or so.

The Green loop are trails we hope to reclaim for beginners. We have one mile of this project done. 10/25/05

The Red loop is the more experienced rider. This trail goes around the outside of the whole trail area. The North (left) side is a climb to the top on the other side you will enjoy and long descent before the hardest climb of the loop. watch out for the cliff and steep rocky descent on the far South side. later this will be reroute for and safety reasons. The Red loop is the most popular route.

The Blue loop is for expert riders. It is tight bumpy single track with steep rocky climbs. this is a much slower trail. but all of it is ride able for the expert cyclist. This trail is not complete but has been marked with orange pin flags as of 10/30/05

This is the complete map after all trails are finished. three main loops beginner(green), sport(Red) and expert(blue).

Cyclocross for 45+?

I went to OKC this week end and was deeply disapointed. For me, the cyclocross state series is over. I will attend the single state event here in Bartlesville but will not travel to OKC for any more races. I have a problem with completing in a series where there is not 45+ age catogory. It is not the promoter's fault. so Why don't we have a 45+ catogory? There is not a lot of 45+ men into cyclocross this year. What the hell is wrong with the 45+ racers? I guess I will take a break and tour around b-ville all winter on my Cyclocross bike.
Anyone 45+ people racing the Tulsa series?

All Welcome at Osage Hills Trail Day

Everyone is invited to “Trail Day” at Osage Hills State Park
Time: 10:00am until 3:00pm
Saturday, October, 22rd 2005

The Osage Hills State Park is located just west of Bartlesville Oklahoma on highway 60.
This trail day is hosted by Keystone off Road Society in cooperation with land owners to build and maintain safe and fun hiking and bicycling trails.
What are we going to do?
We would like to make the trail system easier for first timers and beginners. A small amount of trail will be built and the rest trimmed up. We plan to put up marker on the new trail too. Even if you don’t know how to design or cut and trail using International Mountain bicycle’s rules now is the time to learn.
What should you bring?
Tools will be provided by Keystone off Road Society but if you have tools bring them. We equipped ourselves with lights that we had to
rig up. Randall's didn't have enough charge time and mine had to have a
spliced power wire due to a broken wire and a bad switch needing to be
bypassed.

My mtb skills are a bit rusty and I fell once in a corner. One doesn't think
of it at the time, but falling in the dark can have a bit greater risk as it is
nearly impossible to see what you might be falling upon. With better lighting
than what we had, you could really open up the pace there.

In spite of that, we had a great time riding what will probably become the
"Intermediate" loop there. After riding the loop once, I got the feel for the
trail and we took the second loop at a bit faster pace. One way it was about 30 miles; we had two flats and one cut tire. The bike shop stuck a wrong size tube in my pack, so we used both of Randall's tubes. We were out of tubes except for my patch kit, so Randall rightly 'belayed' me by stopping at a Boulder City bike shop to get new tubes and a tire.
It was a hot day, around 93F, but not humid. We had Camelbaks and I needed a lot of water. The run down to the Dam was narrow with little shoulder. (I wasn't the only roadie with the idea, I counted four more riders coming back out.) You come around a corner and you see the top portion of the Dam, then walk out onto a observation platform and see all the way down, about 1250 feet, to the powerhouse and the water. It was spectacular! The elevator shaft tops on the roadway level have bright polished bronze doors and dedication plaques that give the stats of the Dam. There are Art Deco marble 'marbles' or 'plaques', symbols above the doors dedicated to Irrigation, Flood Control and more. The water on the reservoir side was a suprising deep green, and Lake Mead was vibrant blue. And the water level was low!
There is a large bronze monument to the workers killed on the job, on the north side of the road. "They Died to Make the Desert Bloom", it read.
Apart from the dam, the ride was not terribly scenic (except for looking back down on L.V. from the east), there was a lot of traffic and not much shoulder for me on the last four mile run down to the canyon. (We had cel phones to keep in contact.) The climb out was difficult. After the the hairpins out that were fairly easy, there was a tough 4 mile slog back to Boulder City. We regrouped about 1 and 2/3 hours later.
The irony is that we went to the Interbike Demo day on Tuesday, and I was about 10 miles from Hoover Dam that day! I was test riding a brand new Time VXR road bike (about $4000 with full Dura-Ace) and I took it up a steep hill at Boulder City. It climbed great and I fell in love with the bike! Anyway, I was out of water and really beginning to tire, and talked to another guy riding back up that long hill, and I was afraid I would run out of time and energy coming back from the Dam with a head wind. Dry, hot and dusty that day!
On the Demo day I also test rode a Turner 5-Spot (full suspension long travel all-mountain bike), a Giant TCR Advanced road bike w/full Dura-Ace, a Giant Anthem 1 (dual squish cross country race), a Redline Cyclocross, and a Salsa Dos-Niner softail, and a couple more.
The road back to McGhie Bike and Board and the Vegas Strip was a bit difficult, as I was out of energy and Randall spent a bit pushing me. It ended up being a 60 mile ride. But a worthwhile day, all in all.

Bartlesville team gets second

For Immediate Release – October 3, 2005
Contact – Gale Mills, OSU Extension, 918-534-2216 or mgale@okstate.edu

Boys Bartlesville Team wins Second Place in Little 100

By Gale A. Mills, Family and Consumer Science/4-H Youth Educator, OSU Extension,
Washington County

In their first year of competing, the Boys Bartlesville Little 100 Bicycle Team came away with a second place finish out of ten schools competing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The competition took place at 1 pm on Sunday, October 2, 2005 at Memorial Stadium. A trophy will be alternately displayed at both Central and Madison since riders represented both schools. Monetary rewards will be used for future Little 100 supplies as determined by the winning riders. The Little 100 is a fun and exciting event that is the byproduct of a community program designed to encourage fitness among youth. Participants experience both the challenge of team competition and the satisfaction of participation. The idea behind this program is to introduce a non-traditional program to kids once they reach a responsible age. Age requirements include any middle school student, grades 6-8, in Washington County. Many sports activities require some sort of financial commitment by the participant. This event is totally free. Bikes and helmets are provided for practice. This program is designed to challenge participants physically and mentally by promoting a healthier lifestyle. The boy’s team rode 80 laps around a quarter mile track.

After several girls dropped out, the Bartlesville Girls team was determined to participate with only three riders. Sarah Cowles, Kyndra Vaun Johnston and Kaylee Young had the courage to finish the race. The girl’s team rode 50 laps around a quarter mile track. They came in sixth place.

The Bartlesville Boys and Girls team started practicing in April of 2005 with their coach, Randall Clayborn, Manager of Adventure Bicycle Center. This community is very fortunate to have Randall as their coach since he has worked with the Little 100 relay program since its inception in 2002 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Other supporters of the program in Bartlesville include teacher coordinator, Tom Rovenstine, teacher at Central Middle School, Jerry Stapleton, assisting with bike maintenance and coaching and myself as coordinator for the Bartlesville team.

Sponsors of the Bartlesville Team include: Joe Rovenstine, Shelter Insurance and Randall Clayborn of Adventure Bicycle Center.

Any interested middle school student/school in Washington County can participate. Check out the Little 100 website at http://www.tulsa.little100.org to find out more about this year’s event. Practices for next year’s team will begin in the spring of 2006. I am the manager of Adventure Bicycle Center in Bartlesville. I am also the president of Keystone Off Road Society, a club dedicated to promoting bicycling and mountain biking in the Oklahoma area. My club and I have been asked to promote the Oklahoma State Cyclocross Championships here in Bartlesville. Since being involved in Bicycle Racing I have promoted at least four races per year and at one time promoted over 12 in one year. You may have seen the children’s race during the Oklahoma State Criterium Championships in downtown Bartlesville this year. The club involved (Bartlesville Pedalers) asked me to promote that event as part of their community involvement.
Cyclocross is a bicycle race on a short course of less than one mile using grass and pavement, best suited to a city park. This event tests the rider’s skills by both running on foot and riding they bicycles though a course temporarily marked with small flags and barriers. The day of the event there will be three categories each taking about 1 hour. The total time for this event including set up and break down would be five (5) hours. The date of the State Cyclocross race would be Sunday, Dec. 4 2005. from 11:30 am - 4:30pm
This event is also held in conjunction with the Oklahoma series which takes place in OKC and Tulsa. Here are some details from that series:
Overall Oklahoma Race Schedule
October 23 - Oklahoma CityOctober 30 - Tulsa
November 13 - Oklahoma City December 4 - Bartlesville - State ChampionshipsDecember 11 - Oklahoma City December 18 - Tulsa) January 8 - Oklahoma City January 15 - Bartlesville
Start Time and Duration
B Race - Cats 4/5 - 1:00 -- 45 minutesMasters 35+/Juniors - 1:00 -- 45 minutesAll Women - 1:00 -- 45 minutes Open (A Race) - 2:00 pm -- 60 minutesKid's - 12:45 (based on participation)
The course:
I would like to use the southwest corner of Sooner Park from the Pathfinder Trail to the north side of the tower/basketball courts. I would like to set up registration in the North parking lot next to Madison. Cars can enter and exit at the far northern entry of the parking lot just off Madison.
There should be plenty of room for event parking in that one parking lot. I would like to block off the entry and exit on that side of the park. We can provide insurance from our governing body (USA Cycling) and will be responsible for cleaning up course markers after the race.
We would expect 30 60 people to attend this event. Attached is a map of the course we would like to use and details about our insurance. Go on the web at: www.usacycling.org for more details about Cyclocross events.
Randall Clayborn

My proposal for Osage Hills Trails

Proposal for Osage Hills State Park Mountain Bike trails

About the trail:
The following is a proposal and evaluation of the mountain bike trail system built by the Bartlesville Pedaler’s bicycle club about six years ago. The trail head in question is located just north of the horse barn on the east side of the main entrance. There is about 5 to 6 miles of trails in this area. The trails have withstood the test of time. There is no erosion or undue damage to the land. These trails are a good example of technical mountain bike trails. These trails have many unique features; including long climbs and rocky descents. This is unusual for an Oklahoma trail system and is of great value to the avid cyclist. The variety and natural beauty is outstanding. Once improvements are implemented and the trails are made public, I believe this trail system will be very popular. This proposal doesn’t include the hiking trail inside the park or the Boy Scout trail leading to Boy Scout camp.

Problems with the existing trail system and some solutions:

Problem:
There was no promotion of the trail done so only a small group of people in the area knew about the trails. The local group only used the trail during the winter. The trails become over grown and in bad condition during the summer. Beginner who knew about the trail would tend to use the trails during the summer when it was over grown and not have a positive experience.
Solution:
Keystone Off road Society is a mountain bike club dedicated to promoting Oklahoma mountain bike trails. This mountain bike club would like to promote two events during the year one in the spring and one in the fall. Our governing body: NORBA (International Mountain biking Assoc.) and KORS will obtain necessary insurance and guidelines for each event. The extra traffic and trail work leading to each event will keep the trail open and easy to follow all year around.
In an on going effort, KORS together with the local club, (Bartlesville Pedalers) will maintain and patrol the mountain bike trails in question. A G.P.S. map of the trail would be provided to the rangers and general public with rules to the trail to help maintain continuity of conduct and guidelines. This more public approach will give everyone a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of Osage Hills State Park.

In August of this year,
I received permission by phone from Rick Gavaert to start marking and developing a proposal for the trails. After contacting the Bartlesville Pedaler’s club member Rod Harwood, I was given a GPS map of the trails. With Rod’s help, I remarked the trails. This was important because the trail markers were missing due to the springs grass fires.

Problem:

In September, I invited some of my club members and local people to ride the trail. After polling them, I have rated the trails according to the International Mountain biking Association Criterions. The conclusion was “There are no Easy trails”. I found about 6 miles of trail most of them intermediate to advance. It is necessary to provide beginner trails to increase the popularity of the sport and to encourage people to keep coming back to the trail system and improve their riding skills. Having only trails that are this difficult could be unsafe

Solution:

The overall plan is to increase the beginner trails and close harder trails. This should leave about the same amount of trail. If all trail work is improved and completed we would like to apply for a grant to provide signage for the trail. This would help people stay on the trail and be safer.

This is how we would like to improve the trail system:
(Please find enclosed a GPS map of the trail in question)

The Black lines are the original marked trails.
The Red overlay is trails I would like to block off and reclaim.
The green color overlap is beginner trails, which is close to the parking lot. (Some of which I will have to modify.)
The modifications are marked in blue include new portions marked in purple.
The intermediate are marked in blue
The advance trail is marked in black and is farther from the parking lot.

Problem:
Trails cost money and need volunteers to maintain it.
Solution:
When the improved trail is establish local groups will patrol the trail on a regular basis. This will reduce amateur trail builders from redoing or building new trail.
I have also included the trail building techniques that we will employ. (See attached)
Making signage, handouts, and clinic available to the general public will give continuity to trail work and awareness of goals and rules.
Funding and volunteering to do trail work in the future will depend on the advocacy of the local bike groups. With both Bartlesville Peddlers and KORS, involved in ongoing trail maintenance, funding, and volunteer demands of these trails will be met? Planning events and races will heighten trail awareness and gain support, keeping the trail funded and manned long after the improvements are done.
